Basketball Kinetic Importance
Straight-line speed barely exists in basketball. Nearly every defensive possession is a sequence of short bursts in different directions with the hips and feet reorganising in between, and that is exactly what this drill times. It is the single best predictor here of whether a player can stay in front of someone.
Exact Execution Sequence
- 1Start at a bottom corner of the lane, on the baseline.
- 2Sprint up the side of the lane to the free-throw line.
- 3Side-shuffle across the free-throw line to the far corner.
- 4Backpedal down the far side of the lane to the baseline.
- 5Side-shuffle along the baseline back to the start — then run the whole lap again in the opposite direction.
- 6Best of two attempts.
What Gets an Attempt Disqualified or Re-Run
Strict execution ensures integrity. Disqualified reps are logged with reasons rather than deleted.
- Crossing the feet during a shuffle.
- Turning and running during the backpedal segment.
- Cutting a corner inside the lane line instead of going around it.
